Mangandioxid (Mangan(IV)-oxid) ist ein Oxid des Mangans mit der Summenformel MnO2. Mangan liegt hier in der Oxidationsstufe +4 vor. Aufgrund seines Aussehens (dunkelbraun, glänzt seidig, körnig bis erdig) wird es auch Magnesia nigra oder etwas unpräzise als Braunstein bezeichnet.

Die Oxide des Mangans kommen in allen Oxidationsstufen von +2 bis +7 vor. Oxidationsstufe +3: Beim starken Erhitzen von Mangan(IV)-oxid MnO2 auf über 550 °C entsteht zunächst braunes Mangan(III)-oxid Mn2O3. Durch Erhitzen auf über 900 °C erhält man rotbraunes Mangan(II,III)-oxid Mn3O4.

Das wichtigste technische Verfahren ist heute jedoch durch die Elektrolyse einer Mangan(II)-sulfatlösung zugänglich. Die zweiwertigen Manganionen oxidieren an der Anode zu dreiwertigem Mn3+, das sofort wieder zu Mn2+ und Mn4+ zerfällt und disproportioniert. An der Anode scheidet sich dabei Braunstein ab.
